This prestigious scholarship has been instituted by Mr. Devashish Bharuka, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, on behalf of The Bharuka Trust, in honour of his father, Justice G. C. Bharuka, former Judge of the High Courts of Patna and Karnataka, and former Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.

Justice G. C. Bharuka served with distinction as a Judge of the High Courts of Patna and Karnataka and as Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court (1990–2003). His doctoral work was published as Rejuvenating Judicial System through E-Governance & Attitudinal Change.

Following his retirement, Justice Bharuka was appointed the first Chairman of the E-Committee, Supreme Court of India (2005), where he played a seminal role in framing the National Policy and Action Plan for Implementation of Information and Communication Technology in the Indian Judiciary, laying the foundation for the digitisation of courts across India.

He also served as Visiting Faculty at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, and as a Member of the Governing Body of Chanakya National Law University, Patna.

A book authored by Justice G. C. Bharuka and Mr. Devashish Bharuka, titled The Indian Makeover: From Being Ruled to Being Governed, was launched on 8 December 2023.
